The Monday travel song: Mesečina by Goran Bregović

I propose to start every new week with a song that takes us somewhere in the world.

This week, I propose a good old classic: Mesečina, the leitmotiv song of Emir Kusturica’s film Underground, arranged by Goran Bregović. It is one of the most popular Bregović brass band songs and can be heard millions of times every year at Guča festival.

Mesečina means Moonlight and the lyrics are the following:

Nema vise sunca
Nema vise meseca
Nema tebe, nema mene
Niceg vise, nema joj.
Pokriva nas ratna tama
Pokriva nas tama joj.
A ja se pitam moja draga
Sta ce biti sa nama?

Mesecina, mesecina, joj, joj, joj, joj
Sunce sija ponoc bije, joj, joj, joj, joj
Sa nebesa, zaproklija
Niko ne zna, niko ne zna
Niko ne zna, niko ne zna
Niko ne zna sta to sija

English translation:

The sun is no more
The moon is no more
There is no you nor me
Nothing is there no more, oh no
Covered by the murk of war
Covered by the murk, oh no
And I wonder, my dear
What will become of us?

Moonlight, moonlight
oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no
Sun is shining, midnight rings
oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no
From the heavens, rips the air

No one knows, no one knows
No one knows, no one knows/
No one knows what shines on

Have a great week!
